What happens when a police report is filed for theft?

Someone I know recently stole something from a small convenience store and she got away but they said that if she don't give them the money, they will file a police report. What happens if they do file a police report? Should she just never show up near that place again and she'll be fine? She's scared and asked me to help her find out what happens..
