I want to get a cat but I think declawing is cruel. My mom disagrees vehemently?

I've read about declawing and it seems very cruel. I feel you don't 'maim' an animal so that it will convenience you. My mom says that i'm not using 'common sense' and she says that i'm not listening too her simply because i disagree.
